Boy of 11 is shot by policeman after he phoned asking for help

AN 11-year-old boy was shot in the chest by police in the US after he made a 911 emergency call asking for help during a domestic disturbance, his family said.

Aderrien Murry, below, spent five days in hospital with a collapsed lung, lacerated liver and fractured ribs after being rushed to hospital after an officer shot him early on Saturday, his family’s lawyer Carlos Moore said.

His mother Nakala had asked him to call police at about 4am when she felt threatened after a former partner turned up at their home in Indianola, Mississippi.

When two police officers arrived one kicked the front door before the boy’s mother opened it, Mr Moore said. She told them the intruder had left her home but three children were inside, he added. Mr Moore said an officer shouted into the home and said anyone inside should come out with their hands up.

He said Aderrien walked into the living room with nothing in his hands, and was shot in the chest.

Ms Murry said: “His words were ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do?’ and he started crying. This cannot keep happening. This is not OK.”

She added that her son is “blessed” to be alive and described what happened as “the worst moment in my life”.

She is demanding the police officer is dismissed and charged with aggravated assault and has demanded bodycam footage of the incident is released.

The officer involved has been placed on leave as the shooting is investigated. The incident is the latest in a string of police shootings of unarmed black people in America. The officer who shot Aderrien is black, according to reports.
