TfL ‘played by the rules’ after claims of Ulez stealth moves
Ross Lydall Transport Editor
TRANSPORT for London today claimed it was playing by the rules after being accused of installing Ulez cameras and road signs “by stealth” in boroughs opposed to Sadiq Khan’s Greater London expansion.
Residents in Bexley, Bromley, Harrow and Hillingdon have reported Ulez signs and numberplate-reading cameras “popping up overnight without warning”, according to the four Tory-controlled councils.
Council chiefs are concerned that the appearance of the cameras has led residents to believe — wrongly — that they no longer opposed the expansion of the Ulez to the Greater London boundary, which is due to go live on August 29.
An announcement is expected imminently from the High Court on whether a judicial review application sought by the councils, plus Surrey county council, will proceed to a full hearing this summer.
A TfL spokesman said: “We are working closely with local authorities to install the infrastructure. Where cameras and signs have been installed, all the correct permitting processes have been followed.”
