TODAY’S WIMBLEDON HIGHLIGHTS… AND THE WEATHER AT SW19

Ryan Peniston v Henri Laaksonen

The Briton (right) had his breakout tournament at Queen’s just two weeks ago, when he beat French Open runner-up Casper Ruud. Wimbledon will be his first Grand Slam singles appearance and he has been given the last match on No3 Court. His opponent has the honour of being the Swiss No1 in light of Roger Federer’s ongoing injury problems and

Stan Wawrinka’s struggles to get back to his best form.

Jannik Sinner v Stan Wawrinka Talking of Wawrinka, he has struggled to get through the early rounds in recent years at Wimbledon. Since back-to-back appearances in the quarter-finals, he has made it into the second round three times but no further. He takes on one of the rising stars of the men’s game in the third match on No2 Court.

Angelique Kerber v Kristina Mladenovic Kerber has an impressive record at SW19. Champion in 2018, she enjoyed a renaissance last year when she reached the semi-finals. This year started badly with a case of Covid and then a first-round exit at the Australian Open, but she picked up a 14th career title on clay more recently. Her opponent on No1 Court, Mladenovic, is a former top-10 player and ex-world No1 in doubles.

The weather is set fair for the opening week’s play. While there was a chance of a shower this afternoon, once that spell had passed then there was no more rain forecast until Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Temperatures are set to peak at 24C on Sunday afternoon.
