Why pressure was on for Stranger Things star

Robert Dex Arts Correspondent

STRANGER Things star David Harbour joked that the West End pressure was on him after his wife Lily Allen’s acclaimed stage debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story.

The actor, who plays Jim Hopper in the series, stars opposite Bill Pullman in Theresa Rebeck’s Mad House at the Ambassadors Theatre.

Vegas in September 2020. Allen appeared at Glastonbury as a guest of Olivia Rodrigo — singing her song F**k You in response to the US supreme court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, before returning to London to support her husband on the red carpet yesterday.

Harbour said lockdown allowed the

West End show to become “a real play”.

He plays a man returning to his home to care for his dying father and said he talked to Rebeck about the play throughout lockdown.

He said: “She would send me versions of her draft and I was very interested in her writing and in the themes she was exploring to which I would contribute some of my own ideas.” Harbour, who made his West End debut in 2006, said his original plan was to take on another classic role but he changed his mind as Mad House developed.

He said: “I was approached pre-pandemic to sort of say if you wanted to come back to the stage what would you like to do? The first impulse of course is all these great roles

I’ve never played... and I was like ‘No, man first of all I wanted a woman’s voice, and especially Theresa’s voice which is so strong, and I want new work.’”
