Kendrick Lamar uses Glastonbury finale to blast US abortion ruling

KENDRICK LAMAR closed Glastonbury 2022 with a protest against the ruling by the US Supreme Court which removed the constitutional right to abortion.

With fake blood pouring down his face from a crown of thorns, the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper, inset, proclaimed: “Godspeed for women’s rights. They judge you, they judge Christ.”

Lorde, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo were among other stars at the festival who used performances to condemn the ruling.

The decision by America’s highest court on Friday to overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade judgment paved the way for individual states to ban abortions. Thirteen states had “trigger laws” for bans to come in upon Roe v Wade being overturned.

President Joe Biden called the ruling “a tragic error” and blamed it on his predecessor Donald Trump who appointed three conservative judges to the Supreme Court. Demonstrations against the ruling were held in Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC last night, following similar protests in New York, Austin, Houston, Nashville, Kansas City and other cities. In Phoenix, Arizona, protesters fled when police fired tear gas from the state capitol building after some demonstrators banged on the doors of the senate.

At the BET Awards in Los Angeles, stars including musician Janelle Monae slammed the ruling. After Lizzo opened the show with her song About Damn Time, host Taraji P Henson said: “It’s about damn time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman. It’s a sad day in America.”
