Kirby eyes milestone cap

Simon Collings

CHELSEA forward Fran Kirby says it will be “really special” if she makes her 50th appearance for England tomorrow night.

Kirby is one game off the milestone after recovering from a severe bout of pericarditis in 2019. The 28-year-old will earn her 50th cap if she features away in Latvia, with England looking to maintain their perfect start to World Cup qualifying after beating Northern Ireland 4-0 at Wembley on Saturday.

“Hopefully I get to play a part and get the 50th cap,” said Kirby today. “It is obviously something that I am really proud of. I have been a part of this team for a long time, so for me to get that 50th cap would be really special.

“It is just nice to be back and playing regularly. I am really enjoying it, so I am excited for it. It has been a rollercoaster, for sure, but it is a journey I am really proud of and one that I think, looking back, I wouldn’t change a lot.

“I have been through a lot but it has made me who I am.”
