Pitt and Clooney’s coffee war gives M&C Saatchi pick-me-up

Simon English

THE coffee advertising war between Brad Pitt and George Clooney has helped M&C Saatchi bounce back from two years to forget.

Pitt is the new ambassador for Italian brand De’Longhi, going head-to-head against Clooney and Nespresso. The Pitt campaign is the first global ad for De’Longhi, one of several M&C client wins in the first half of the year. Clooney has advertised Nespresso since 2006.

De’Longhi helped Soho firm M&C bounce back from a tough two years that included an accounting scandal and a management overhaul. Revenues jumped 15% to £171 million and profit rose from £2 million to £10.5 million.

CEO Moray MacLennan called it a “key turning point” and said: “M&C is back to growth.”

MacLennan said life was returning to the company’s Soho offices with around 200 staff now regularly in the building. That’s about a third of its total. MacLennan also expressed relief that M&C was retained by the Government, its biggest UK client. Shares rose 5p to 151p.
