Maldives is go! It’s time to book some autumn sun

Suzannah Ramsdale

THE world’s ultimate tropical escape, is off the red list! Race you to the sun loungers...

Cheap and chic Gangehi Island Resort

A paradise for divers, located on the outskirts of the North Ari Atoll, Gangehi Island is protected by one of the most vibrant reefs in the country. Get your underwater camera at the ready for sharks, stingrays, manta rays, turtles and dolphins. On dry land, the white sand beaches and towering coconut palms are the ideal backdrop for the basic but comfortable villas (a mix of overwater, beach and garden). Book in at the tranquil Ginger Spa for traditional ayurvedic treatments — the couples massage is a must. The delightful staff also deserve a mention.

Blow the budget Soneva Jani

This is the newer sister resort to Maldives icon Soneva Fushi, and both reign supreme as two of the best in the Maldives. The hotel’s philosophy of “no shoes, no news” is a balm for weary, wrung-out Londoners. You’ve probably seen the sexy overwater villas, with their slides providing direct access to the ocean and retractable roofs for stargazing, all over Instagram. Oh, and there is a free chocolate room filled with all-you-can-eat sweets.

The overwater, open-air silent cinema at the far end of the island is a treat (singer John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen were there recently). The So Starstruck restaurant, which is home to the Maldives’ first overwater observatory complete with gigantic telescope and dedicated astronomer to help you understand what you’re looking at, is a magical experience. There’s also an overwater bar and wine-tasting space, spa, gym and a kids’ club so good you’ll be tempted to hang out there yourself.

⬤ From £1,923 per night; soneva.com
