Nicholas Cecil Political Editor

BRITAIN’S top soldier today warned Iran it had made a “big mistake” after a drone attack on a tanker which killed a British security guard.

General Sir Nick Carter, Chief of the Defence Staff, told BBC Radio the West would have to “restore deterrence” to avoid such incidents spiralling into more dangerous situations which could be “very disastrous”.

The UK, US and Israel have blamed Tehran for the July 29 drone strike on the Mercer Street tanker off the coast of Oman which killed the Briton and a Romanian. After Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called it an “unacceptable attack”, Sir Nick accused Iran of “very reckless behaviour” .
